You could be mistaken for thinking this is Scotland, but no, it’s Glenorchy in the South Island of New Zealand!
If you had the chance to watch Jane Campion’s ‘Top of the Lake‘, you would remember the scene where they dragged a body out of the lake- well this was this lake! There was plenty more of the show that was filmed in this tiny corner of the world, but the ‘body being dragged’ scene was the first thing that sprung to mind.
It is such a gorgeous town. We bought a small bag of fudge and a coffee and spent a couple of hours walking along the edge of the lake and we only really saw a few other people for the time we were there. Because this is NZ- there were also a couple of amazing cafes and restaurants (you can be in the middle of absolutely nowhere in NZ and still find a decent latte.. I don’t know how they do it!).
If you want to continue on the Top of the Lake journey you can do what we did and drove about 45 mins (20 mins on tarred road and 25 minutes down a dirt track) to the place Moke Lake where Holly Hunter’s bizarre female commune was filmed.
Glenorchy is a short drive from Queenstown- one of the most beautiful towns on the planet. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- GO TO NZ IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY!
If you want to bring a bit of Glenorchy into your place then see the items above!
