INTERIOR STYLING - HOW TO guide: rugs

Selecting the correct rug size can dramatically enhance the overall look, feel, and functionality of a room. While colour and pattern often take centre stage, size is arguably the most critical element—and one of the most common decorating mistakes. A well-proportioned rug has the power to visually anchor furniture, define zones, and elevate the ambience of a space. Here's a guide to choosing the right rug size for your home.

Avoid the Common Mistake: Going Too Small

A rug that is too small can make a room feel disconnected and underwhelming, often leaving furniture floating without a sense of cohesion. By contrast, a well-sized rug brings balance and unity, creating a foundation upon which the rest of the room can shine.

As a general rule, it is always better to size up if you are unsure. A larger rug lends a sense of luxury and proportion, whereas a smaller one may visually shrink the space.

Living Room Guidelines

In a living room, the rug should frame the main seating area. Ideally, all front legs of your sofa and armchairs should sit on the rug, if not all four. This helps unify the arrangement and creates a more intentional layout.

  • Smaller spaces: A 160x230cm rug may work in compact rooms but can appear undersized in larger ones.

  • Standard to large spaces: Consider rugs that are 200x300cm or 250x350cm to effectively ground the furniture.

Aim to leave a border of 20–30cm between the rug and the walls to define the area without overwhelming the room.

Dining Room Considerations

In dining areas, a rug should be large enough to accommodate both the table and chairs, even when the chairs are pulled out. This ensures comfort and prevents chair legs from catching on the rug’s edges.

  • Allow at least 60cm of clearance beyond the table on all sides.

  • For round dining tables, a round rug is often the most harmonious choice, though a well-proportioned rectangular option can also work.

Bedroom Proportions

There are several effective ways to incorporate a rug into a bedroom layout:

  1. Full coverage: A large rug that sits beneath the entire bed and bedside tables offers a cohesive, luxurious feel.

  2. Partial placement: Position the rug two-thirds under the bed, starting just in front of the bedside tables and extending beyond the foot of the bed.

  3. For a queen bed, a rug around 250x350cm typically works well.

  4. For a king bed, consider sizing up to 270x360cm.

Alternatively, placing runners on either side of the bed provides comfort underfoot and works well in smaller rooms.

Final Thoughts

When selecting a rug, remember that the right size can transform your space—bringing warmth, balance, and visual harmony. Always take measurements before purchasing, and when in doubt, opt for the larger option. Investing in the correct size rug is not just a design decision—it’s a way to ensure your space feels complete and considered.
